Mind tempting you with words

Don't be interested in the words that the mind is serving up for you. It is putting them there to tempt you into a stream of thoughts that will take you away from the Self. You have to ignore them all and focus on the light that is shining within you. (Cow Lakshmi Day)

Giving up false identification

When I say give up your false identification with the "I am the body" idea, I don't mean that you are not the body, I mean that you should give up the idea that you are only the body. You are all bodies, all things, all creation, but this knowledge will not come unless you give up identifying with particular objects, such as "I am the body" and limiting thoughts such as "I am this person". When you have given up all thoughts, all identifications, the true knowledge suddenly dawns on you: "I am the unmanifest Self, and I am also the whole of manifestation."

Continuous Effort

Self-enquiry must be done continuously. It doesn't work if you regard it as a part-time activity. You must have a lifelong commitment to establish yourself in the Self. Your determination to succeed must be strong and firm, and it should manifest as continuos effort. -- Sri Annamalai Swami

Go beyond I-am

The ‘I am’ is the permanent link in the succession of events called life, be at the link ‘I am’ only and go beyond it.

Saturday, April 28, 2012

'I-am'

Why not turn away from the experience to the experiencer and realize the full import of the only true statement you can make: ‘I am’. Just keep in mind the feeling ‘I am’, merge in it, till your mind and feeling become one. By repeated attempts you will stumble on the right balance of attention and affection and your mind will be firmly established in the thought-feeling ‘I am’. Whatever you think, say or do, this sense of immutable and affectionate being remains as the ever-present background of the mind.

All perceivable is transient

Do not bother about anything you want, or think, or do, just stay put in the thought and feeling, ‘I am’, focusing ‘I am’ firmly in your mind. All kinds of experience may come to you – remain unmoved in the knowledge that all perceivable is transient and only the ‘I am’ endures.

Staying in I-am

You must meditate on the 'I am' without holding on to the body-mind,
the 'I am' is the first ignorance, persist on it and you will go beyond it.

Your Guru, your God is the 'I am', with its coming came duality and all activity,
stay on the 'I am',
you are before the 'I am' appeared.

Remain focused on the 'I am' till it goes into oblivion,
then the eternal is, the Absolute is, Parabrahman is.

Stabilize in the beingness

You must come to a firm decision. You must forget the thought that you are a body and be only the knowledge "I Am," which has no form, no name. Just be. When you stabilize in that beingness it will give all the knowledge and all the secrets to you, and when the secrets are given to you, you transcend the beingness, and you, the Absolute, will know that you are also not the consciousness. Having gained all this knowledge, having understood what is what, a kind of quietude prevails, a tranquility. Beingness is transcended, but beingness is available. (from Prior to Consciousness)

Self alone exists

Self-enquiry is the process by which attention is put on the substratum instead of on the names and forms that are habitually imposed on it. Self is the substratum out of which all things appear to manifest, When the Self is seen and known, all these ideas fade away and one is let with the knowledge: Self alone exists. -- A.S

The world and the senses

If we want to go beyond the mind and body, we have to understand and fully accept that all the information the senses provide is not real. Like the mirage that produces an illusory oasis in the desert, the sense create the impression that there a real world in front of us that is being perceived by the mind. The apparent reality of the world is an illusion. It is merely a misperception. We see the superimposition, the unreal names and forms we have created and we forget about the substratum, the reality that underlies them. -- A.S

"I am the body" causes maya

There are so many thoughts in the mind. Thought after thought after thought... But there is one thought that is continuous, "I am the body". This is the string on which all other thoughts are threaded. Once we identify ourselves with the body by thinking this thought, maya follows. If we cease to identify ourselves with the body, maya will not affect us anymore. -- A.S.

Advent Day 2011

Once again the time comes when Sri Ramana left his home for the Holy Arunachala hill. Bhagavan started the journey on August 29 and reached Arunachala on September 1 (Advent Day).

This is an auspicious time to step up one's enquiry. Know and always hold onto the Self.

Bhagavan Aradhana 2011 - Who Am I

By the inquiry 'Who am I?'. The thought 'who am I?' will destroy all other thoughts, and like the stick used for stirring the burning pyre, it will itself in the end get destroyed. Then, there will arise Self-realization.

When other thoughts arise, one should not pursue them, but should inquire: 'To whom do they arise?' It does not matter how many thoughts arise. As each thought arises, one should inquire with diligence, "To whom has this thought arisen?". The answer that would emerge would be "To me". Thereupon if one inquires "Who am I?", the mind will go back to its source; and the thought that arose will become quiescent. With repeated practice in this manner, the mind will develop the skill to stay in its source. When the mind that is subtle goes out through the brain and the sense-organs, the gross names and forms appear; when it stays in the heart, the names and forms disappear.

A quiet mind

When the mind is quiet, we come to know ourselves as the pure witness. We withdraw from the experience and its experiencer and stand apart in pure awareness, which is between and beyond the two. The personality, based on self-identification, on imagining oneself to be something: "I am this, I am that", continues, but only as a part of the objective world. It's identification with the witness snaps.

as near to God as we are ...

Pope John Paul II declared in a public audience
in 1990 that "also the animals possess a soul and
men must love and feel solidarity with our smaller brethren".

He said, too, that they are the "fruit of the creative
action of the Holy Spirit and merit respect," and are
as near to God as men are."

The Pope went on to say that, "animals have the breath of life and were given it by God. In this respect, man created by the hand of God is identical with all living creatures. ... The existence therefore of all living creatures depends on the living spirit/breath of God that not only creates but also sustains and renews the face of the earth."

Do not grieve, Arjuna

The self does not kill, nor is it killed. For the self is never born and never dies, nor may it ever become non-existent. This unborn, everlasting, abiding self is not slain when the body is slain. Knowing the self to be unborn, imperishable, everlasting, changeless, Arjuna, how can a man slay anyone or be slain?

As a man gets rid of worn out clothes and puts on new ones, so the self puts away worn-out bodies and puts on others that are new. Weapons do not cut up the self, fire does not burn it, water does not wet it, the wind does not dry it. Not capable of being cut, burned, wet, or dried, the self is everlasting, present in all things, unchangeable, unmoveable, for ever the same.

Knowing that the soul is immaterial and unalterable, you should not grieve, Arjuna.

Changeless Being

I have always existed, you too have always existed, and those princes have always existed. The time shall never come when we shall all cease to exist.

What is not there cannot exist; what is there cannot be anything but existent. The distinction between these states has been recognized by those who study truth. That which pervades this universe is imperishable; no one can destroy that changeless being. It is these bodies that house the everlasting, imperishable, incomprehensible self that have an end

Eyes cannot see him

Eye cannot see him, nor words reveal him;

"I am" is you

"When we examine the mind of the average person, we find that he usually identifies himself with mind or body.
He either thinks that he is body or that he is mind, and therefore he can control
neither mind nor body.

The "I Am" in his nature is submerged
in a bundle of ideas, some of which are true and some of which are not, and his thought is usually controlled by those ideas without receiving any direction whatever from that principle within him
that alone was intended to give direction.
Such a man lives in the lower storey of human existence, but as we can control life only when we give directions from the upper storey, we discover just why the average person neither understands his forces nor has the power to use them.
He must first elevate himself to the upper storey of the human structure, and the first and most important step to be taken in this direction is to recognize the "I Am" as the ruling principle, and that the "I Am" is you."

Thought is not the Self

Thought is something foreign, alien, to the true Self.

Thought pretends to be the Self.

Thought is an imposter.
Thought believes that it is a real entity, and that it is a real self.

Advice from Amma

"The real important thing is the control we have over our mind in all situations,” Amma said. “If someone becomes angry at us, we should not react and become angry also. We should reflect, ‘Whom am I becoming angry at?’ In such situations we should remember that it is all the Atma, the Supreme Self. We should think, ‘The consciousness that is within me is within that person also. Can consciousness become angry? And if all is one, to whom can it express its anger?’ We should give more importance to the Self and not the body.”

The fleeting "I", who is aware of it

The mind is incessantly looking not only for food for thought; it is looking for food for its identity, its sense of self. This is how the ego comes into existence and continuously re-creates itself.

When you think or speak about yourself, when you say, "I", what you usually refer to is "me and my story". This is the "I" of your likes and dislikes, fears and desires, the "I" that is never satisfied for long. It is a mind-made sense of who you are, conditioned by the past, and seeking to find its fulfillment in the future.

Can you see that this "I" is fleeting, a temporary formation, like a wave pattern on the surface of the water.

Who is it that sees this?

Who is it that is aware of the fleetingness of your physical and psychological form?

Have full faith in your being-ness

All of you are like beggars; you have got a begging bowl and you want to collect God in that.

Take it that this "I Amness" of yours is the unadulterated form of Godlihood; the pure Iswara state is your beingness.
It is quite proper and praiseworthy that you are listening to the talks. Nevertheless, you are not getting rid of this attachment to the body-mind. You are constantly surrounded by relations or intimacies connected with your body-mind. Have full faith in your beingness and allow it to grow into the manifest Iswara principle. It is all powerful - meditate on that. It is very simple, yet at the same time, very profound.

The consciousness is the seed of Godliness. If we give it its true importance and pray to it, then it will flower into Godliness. If we don't give it any importance, it will not flower into Godliness.

Give attention to how this "I Am-ness" has appeared - then you will know.

Accept this identification only: that you are this manifest pure beingness,

you are just wearing this bodily attire. Make a note of it; you have taken
down so many things in life, just for fun, why don't you take this down
also and see what happens?

See what happens when you look at the moon and know that the moon is there provided you are there; because you are, the moon is. This grand concept, this joy, you directly experience and enjoy.

Freedom from the World Illusion

Live in the present with your consciousness externalized momentarily, but without any effort: when the mind stops linking itself to the past and to the future it becomes no-mind. If from moment to moment your mind dwells on what is and drops it effortlessly at once, the mind becomes no-mind, full of purity.

It is only as long as the mind continues to be agitated that it experiences diversity of its own projection or expansion, even as rain falls only as long as there are clouds; and it is only as long as the infinite consciousness limits itself into the finite mind that such agitation and expansion take place. If consciousness ceases to be the finite mind, then know that the very roots of cyclic world-illusion (of birth and death) are burnt and there is perfection.

The individual is an appearance

Do you not see how ridiculous all this is ? Your coming here day after day only shows that you are not prepared to accept my word that there is no such thing as an 'individual'; that the 'individual' is nothing but an appearance; that an appearance cannot have any 'bondage' and, therefore, there is no question of any 'liberation' for an appearance.

Do you even now realize that if the very basis of your seeking is wrong, what can you achieve ? Indeed, is there anything to be achieved ? By whom ? By an appearance ?

This is not all. Whatever I say is being tape-recorded by some people; some others take down their own notes. For what purpose ? To make the conditioning even more powerful ? Do you not realize that there never has been any question of 'who' ? Whatever has happened (if at all anything has happened) has been spontaneous. There never has been any room for an individual in the totality of manifestation; all the functioning is at the level of the conceptual physical space (Mahadakash), which is contained in a conceptual speck of consciousness the mental space of time, perception and cognition (Chidakash).

Be still

Once Sri Ramana said the whole truth is contained in the words”Be Still”.

So if one is self-aware and still, one has grasped the method.

A quiet, peaceful, and content mind that is awake and turned within to its source has grasped the method and the process of Self-Inquiry. This process itself turns into the goal when the mind merges into the Heart for Self-Revelation.

Pleasure and happiness

Pleasure depends on things, happiness does not. As long as we believe that we need things to make us happy, we shall also believe that in their absence we must be miserable. Mind always shapes itself according to it's beliefs. Hence the importance of convincing oneself that one need not be prodded into happiness; that, on the contrary, pleasure is a distraction and a nuisance, for it merely increases the false conviction that one needs to have and do things to be happy, when in reality it is
just the opposite.

But why talk of happiness at all? You do not think of happiness except when you are unhappy. A man who says "Now I am happy" is between two sorrows, past and future. This happiness is mere excitement caused by relief from pain. Real happiness is utterly
un-self-conscious. It is best expressed negatively as: "there is nothing wrong with me, I have nothing to worry about".

Once you have grasped the truth that the world is full of suffering, that to be born is a calamity, you will find the urge and the energy to go beyond. Pleasure puts you to sleep and pain wakes you up. If you do not want to suffer, don't go to sleep. You cannot know yourself through bliss alone, for bliss is your very nature. You must face the opposite, what you are not, to find enlightenment.

Focus the mind on 'I am'

I did not condition my mind by thinking: 'I am God, I am wonderful, I am beyond'. I simply followed his (my guru's) instruction which was to focus the mind on pure being 'I am'. and stay in it. I used to sit for hours together, with, nothing but the 'I am' in my mind and soon peace and joy and a deep all-embracing love became my normal state.

In it all disappeared - myself, my Guru, the life I lived, the world around me. Only peace remained and unfathomable silence.

Ask yourself such questions as: 'Was I really born?' 'Am I really so-and-so? 'How do I know that I exist?' 'Who are my parents?' 'Have they created me, or have I created them?' 'Must I believe all I am told about myself?' 'Who am I, anyhow?'

Bhagavan Ramana's Enlightenment Day

Dear readers,
Wishing you the best on Bhagavan's Enlightenment Day. On this day, in 1896, Bhagavan realized the Self. This day is an approximation, we do not for sure know which that day was when Venkataraman Iyer realized the Self, but it was close to July 17th.
Guru Poornima is tomorrow and Advent Day on Sept 1st.

Lakshmi Day 14/07/2008

July 14th is Cow Lakshmi Day this year, a day of immense grace for those committed to self-enquiry, or union with Bhagavan. Be sure to get as much Self-enquiry done as possible on the 14th.

Some beautiful words from Sri Nisargadatta.

My guru, before he died, told me: "Believe me, you are the Supreme Reality. Don't doubt my words, don't disbelieve me. I am telling you the truth, act on it". I could not forget his words and by not forgetting, I have realized. Once the guru told me: "You are the Supreme Reality", I ceased having visions and trances and became very quiet and simple. I found myself desiring and knowing less and less, until I could say in utter astonishment: "I know nothing, I want nothing."

I was undeceived, that is all. I used to create a world and populate it. Now I don't do it any more. Now I live in the void beyond being and non-being, beyond consciousness.

Worshipping the Unmanifest

"But those who are engaged in the worship of the Imperishable, the Indefinable, the Invisible, the Omnipresent, the Unthinkable, the Immutable, the Immovable, and fixed

"Controlling all the senses, maintaining equanimity everywhere, engaged in the welfare of all beings, they also come to Me only.

"It is very difficult for those whose minds are preoccupied with the Unmanifest because for the embodied souls it is indeed very painful to make progress towards the Unmanifest."

Lord Krishna, Chapter 12.

Mind fixed on Me

Asked Arjuna:

"Those devotees who are always engaged in Your worship,
or those who worship the Inexhaustible and the Unmanifested,
which of these two know the Yoga better?"

[Chapter 12 verse 1]

Said Lord Krishna:

" With their minds fixed on Me,
those who worship Me always,
with faith and sincerity,
they are considered to be the most qualified in the Yoga by Me."

[Bhagavad Gita: Chapter 12 verse 2]

Service to the Lord

Sri Ramana advises:

Keeping one's attention on the subtle consciousness that is experienced by the extremely subtle mind, is personal service to me.

Does this activity give me only temporary joy ?

Do not waste time in activities that lead only to that which is temporary and therefore futile.

Ask of each activity: “Where can this lead?”

Ask of each activity: “Can this lead to eternal bliss, or does this just lead to that which is temporary?”

Grace manifests itself when ...

"Grace manifests itself when the quest for the Self begins. The quest itself is the result of Grace. There is not a single moment when Grace is not operating in us. Grace is beyond time and space. Grace is always there. It is the beginning, middle and end. Grace is the Self."

-- Sri Bhagavan Ramana Maharshi.

Please see quest itself is the result of Grace.

Eagerness for liberation

Eagerness for liberation must be equal to the eagerness someone who is being held underwater has, for trying to rise to the surface.

Desire for freedom

If the desire for freedom is not great enough in you, the ego will always find a way to occupy your time with something other than spiritual practice.

Practice, not concepts

The ego keeps thoughts about spiritual concepts going, to avoid the practice that leads to the ego’s final end.

Spiritual concepts do not lead to freedom.
Only practice leads to freedom.

Meditating on the Lord

Knowing that what abides in your Heart is the Self, my true and real nature, you should search for it there. Only this can be regarded as meditating on me with devotion.

The "I" thought

Thinking that thinking or thought is your self is a delusion, a dream-like illusion.

Thinking that you are a body living in a world is a delusion, a dream-like illusion.

Thought has created those delusions.

All sorrow, suffering and delusions have one single root.
The single root is thought.
The root of thought is the I thought.
The root of thought is the thought, I.

Bringing sense back to Sri Ramana's teachings

Over the years, Bhagavan Ramana's simple path of "clinging to oneself", or being as you are, holding onto awareness/ the feeling of "I", etc, has been complicated by various authors. This simple path has seemingly been lost in translation.

It is heartening, therefore, that Michael Langford has once again put it in simple words for all, in a manner that cannot be missed or confused. In addition, he puts in several chapters to motivate the reader to remain in self-awareness.

The seeker who has never experienced "the Self", is often confused by instructions such as "abide in the Self", "cling to the Self" etc, now understands that it was the most simple fundamental awareness of oneself that was being spoken of, the awareness that wakes up in the morning, the awareness that is looking at the computer screen at this moment -- focusing on that awareness.

At any rate, let me not confuse the reader again -- it is best to read it directly from Mr. Langford himself.

Awareness, not thought

Living from thought instead of living from Awareness is the cause of all human suffering.

Ego Tricks

However, to go on and on reading spiritual books is an ego preservation strategy, another of the ego’s tricks.

Most reading, discussing and thinking about spiritual teachings is an ego trick.

The ego keeps thoughts about spiritual concepts going to avoid the practice that leads to the ego’s final end.
